Darksteel Angel by JTMS Darksteel Angel by JTMS
So, I love MtG, and I noticed this art for the teaser for Mirrodin Pure (which doesn't exist - sadly, damn those Phyrexians) was being underused on custom cards. I decided to fix this. Unfortunately, I don't actually know who did the art, as I couldn't find it. Regardless, I think with all the -1/-1 counter and proliferate now, this isn't too badly broken. Feedback = awesome.

Hmm.
I think a way to balance this card a little more and make it not a blightsteel colossus for Platinum Angel it should probably be

7
Flying
Indestructible.
You can't lose the game.
4/4

The difference being I can still pull off an alternate win con, but I can't beat you down or poison you. Because most mass removal won't do jack against this now.

Still, an awesome concept and great art.

Maybe Add: "Tap: You may Remove any number of poison counters from target player or -1/-1 counters from traget creature. For each counter removed this way, Darksteel Angel gains Hexproof for one consective turn. When you activate this ability, Darksteel Angel loses Indestructiblity until end of turn."

it shows how a mirridion Pure might've come about if the Mirridions had been a bit luckier with their timing.

alt suggestion: make a 'PureSteel'/'Pristine' Angel with these abilities.

Where'd you get the art? It's totally legit.

From Wizards themselves. They weren't telling for some time whether it was going to be Mirrodin Pure or New Phyrexia, so they released images for both.

Sadly, as of New Phyrexia, this card is actually underpowered.

I'm just so glad that Innistrad came to steamroll Phyrexian strategies.

I agree with what several people have already said. An increase in the cast cost from 8 to 9 would seem appropriate given the fact that indestructibility is a huge add-on for a this already effective card. No longer can simple destroy spells and effects work, people would have to go out of their way to get some exile removal or sacrifice removal, unless they're playing blue where bounce removal is the name of the game. Good card overall, my friend was hoping this card would exist in "Mirrodin Pure" which never happened. I'm sure that if it was Mirrodin Pure, we would've seen this card for sure.

Well -1/-1 will only work if a deck uses that, which only 1 archetype does. Maybe instead of making it indestructible have it be hexproof and a 6/6?

That defeats the purpose of it being "Darksteel" though.

Sorry, I didn't know the card was meant to be darksteel. I figured you could just change that. But I think a card is incredibly powerful if the only way to deal with it is to run a specific deck type.

There are several deck themes that can deal with creatures using that theme, but every deck can and should be running some kind of removal to deal with bomb cards that are hard to deal with. White has Oblivion Ring, Revoke Existance and Dispatch for standard. Blue has bounces and counter spells of many kinds. Black has forced sacrifice effects and and toughness reduction (Like what :devttms: suggested, Dismember). Red has creature stealing like Act of Agression and Traitorous Blood. Sadly green doesn't have much to deal with this particular card, but I'm sure you see now that any deck can be equipped to deal with anything, it just has to be built correctly.
Also if you look at the angel itself in the image, you couldn't call it anything except darksteel, due to the yellow rings floating around it.

Literally ever deck in standard runs Dismember now. If you can't deal with this card, you're doing something wrong.

Your darksteel is no match for... OBLIVION RING!!! But you knew that...

A fine card for the illustration, and it indeed has a sense of staunch hope and power that still has some weaknesses. I'd play this card any day!

Should be a 9 cost
Platinum angel had all that but Indestructable and was 7 cost. Indestructable usually adds 1 or 2 for cost, but because of its other abilities I think it's worth way more.

Really good job though.

of course there's nothing to say you'll instantly win the game on it, but unless your opponent has the answer right there in hand, you have a huge advantage. Besides, if you can't win while they try to deal with this, you don't deserve to win.

Great Card.

New Phrexia just shows the WotC are either out of ideas or they're too lazy. Personally I think it should cost 6 instead of 8.

Really? I thought that new Phyrexia was most interesting and doesn't show a lack of effort on Wizards' part. If anything, it showed that the developers could imagine a whole world of Phyrexia split into all 5 colors rather than just black, and once the Phyrexians conquered Mirrodin, the 5 factions began feuding with one another, a realistic course of action for creatures like Phyrexians. Plus the Praetors were neat both in the game and in their illustrations.

With new phyrexia, the developers could go back though the planes we have already visited pitting them against the Phyrexians. That doesn't seem vary creative to me.

Destroy it and make it so that even the oldest beings in the mutiverse wouldn't remember it ever existed.

Well, I like that they had Phyrexia fight against Mirrodin. Now with the 5 different factions, the next time we visit Mirrodin there will be multiple wars going on. I don't think Phyrexia will be able to unite anymore since they now have all 5 colors of mana. It'd be hard to see them rise together to take over another plane.

Or hopefully Karn will return and put things right again. More likely though, one or two colors will come out on top and control the others allowing them to rise and start taking over other planes.

From what I've read, Karn said the plane was lost. So I don't think that'll happen. And I really don't think that they'll be able to rise together, like I said before. They're 5 differents colors of evil, and evil doesn't work together.
Also, what you said earlier, how would you destroy a plane?

Yeah, but then it would be strictly better than a Platinum Angel, which it basically is, only indestructible too.

1 more colourless mana to manke a platinum angel indestructible already trivializes having a platinum angel in the first place. The point is to summon a platinum angel and give her things like dark steel plate to make her indestructible. This cuts out the middle man and also the strategy.

If wotc were ever to make an indestructible platinum angel, it would either cost (10) or it would have 2 toughness.

The art however is gloriously appropriate.

Seeing as you posted the expression "Trivializes" on two of my cards, I'm going to explain this to you.

Creature cards get better.

The game is constantly evolving. Wurmcoil Engine would never have been printed 6 years ago, but they'd never design a card like Force of Will now.

The game started with poorly powered creatures, and overpowered spells. Now, spells and creatures have been balanced out. Even being indestructible, white has exile, blue has counter/bounce, black has forced sac, and toughness reduction, and R/G should have won before it hits the field. And if you're playing a multicolour deck, you should ALWAYS have answers for it.

I'm currently playing with an updated angel deck of mine, and Platinum Angel (my first Angel card) still kicks ass. There's power creep, and then there's power creep you know? Should Baneslayer have costed 1 or two more than Serra? Probably. Should they make a pre-protected Platinum Angel...? Maybe not... In this day and age, creature power still doesn't mean squat. An old outdated dark banishing will still kill Baneslayer Angel. People would of flipped out way more if they gave her protection from Red and Black, instead of from Demons and Dragons, and personally, I feel Sigarda is more undercosted because of her ability. Platinum Angel teaches players to put removal in their decks, or else they just fail every time. Slap indestructibility on it automatically, and soon, even basic removal is rendered useless. Atleast if it cost 9, which would be appropriate, It would give opponents a better chance. Iona costs 9 and she pretty much ensure's victory.
